As the new PASS standards and objectives are implemented, there is a transition period before the criteria for test alignment with PASS can be completely met. During this transition time, items are developed and field tested in order to meet the criteria for alignment to the revised PASS standards and objectives.
For the purposes of the OCCT and OMAAP Assessments:
• 2011-12 assessment year, the version of Science PASS used for the 2010-11 assessments will be reused. New items/questions which correlate to Science PASS (revision 2011) will appear only as field test items.
• 2012-13 assessment year, Science PASS (revision 2011) will be used to build the tests.
Both sets of blueprints are posted on the SDE Website. http://www.sde.state.ok.us/AcctAssess/core.html
Note: While the number of items per standard and/or objective will be different between the OCCT and OMAAP tests due to fewer total questions, the percentage of the test covering a standard will be similar between the two assessments.
Please feel free to contact me if there are any questions regarding the state assessments.
Thank you,
Gaile Loving, M ED.

In the first installment of a new web series, an NSTA article, Anticipating the Conceptual Framework for Science Education (PDF), takes an early look at the soon-to-be released framework and explores its development, role, possible content, and relationship to science standards. NSTA’s goal is to help science educators prepare for the Next Generation Science Standards by better understanding the framework on which they will be built.
The National Research Council (NRC) and Achieve, Inc., with support from NSTA and AAAS, have embarked on a two-step process to develop science standards. The first step is to develop a Conceptual Framework that is grounded in current research and identifies the science all K12 students should know. The NRC is conducting this work and is expected to release the framework in late spring. This framework will not only be a guide for developing the standardsa process led by Achieve, Inc. it will be a valuable resource for many in the science education community.
Stay tuned to NSTA.org for more details about The Common Core, the Science Conceptual Framework, and the Next Generation Science Standards. It’s yet another reason why NSTA (and OSTA for that matter) is worth the price of membership.

The Women in Science Conference has historically been held the first Tuesday of February each year. However, after successive years of severe winter weather negatively impacting travel for students and teachers, the conference date is being moved to the fall. The next Women in Science Conference will be held Tuesday, October 4, 2011, at Science Museum Oklahoma in Oklahoma City.
Registration for the conference is now open! The registration deadline is September 15, or when maximum occupancy has been reached. A maximum of two teachers and ten students from each school may register. Registration has been simplified this year, with teachers registering themselves and a specific number of students via the online registration link below. Students’ names do not have to be provided at the time of registration–only the specific number of students that the teacher will be bringing to the conference must be noted on the form. Teachers will provide the students’ names to EPSCoR the morning of the event.
Women in Science encourages young people to pursue careers in science, technology, engineering and mathematics (STEM) fields. The free, one-day conference is designed to allow students in grades six through 12 to engage in hands-on science activities; learn first-hand about science and technology career opportunities from Oklahoma’s top female scientists and engineers; and receive college preparation information from Oklahoma college, university and outreach representatives.
The goal of the Women in Science conference is to show students that STEM careers are exciting, attainable and rewarding. The conference provides young people with real-world examples of science and engineering career opportunities and allows them to meet successful women scientists, doctors and engineers from our state.
Past keynote speakers have included NASA astronaut Dr. Susan W. Lucid; Kylah McNabb, wind maven and Oklahoma Department of Commerce wind energy development specialist; and other professional women at the top of their fields.
Teachers attending the event receive valuable information about summer research opportunities, classroom resource materials and suggestions for supporting and encouraging young women’s interest in STEM disciplines.
Women in Science Conferences are sponsored by the Oklahoma Experimental Program to Stimulate Competitive Research (EPSCoR), in collaboration with the Oklahoma State Regents for Higher Education, National Science Foundation, Science Museum Oklahoma and other funding agencies.
For more information, contact Gina Miller, OK EPSCoR outreach coordinator, at 405.744.7645 or email gmiller@okepscor.org.
