HHMI Night at the Movies With Sean Carroll
You are invited to HHMI’s Night at the Movies with Sean Carroll, featuring the premiere ofThe Making of the Fittest, a series of short films created to help your students get a firm grasp on core evolutionary concepts like natural selection, and to expose them to cutting-edge research on topics like how new genes evolve while other genes just fade away. This red-carpet event will take place at 6 pm on Wednesday, October 12th and is FREE to attend.

Laptops, phones, pads, ereaders and more – are your students online even when they are face to face? Would you like to harness their digital savvy to improve their educational success? You are invited to participate in the Cyberlearning for Community Colleges (C3) workshop at the 2011 NABT Professional Development Conference. Explore online resources and learn how you can apply cyberlearning in your classroom. This workshop is free, and participants will receive a one year membership with NABT and full registration for the 2011 Conference.

Understanding K–12 Science Learning Progressions and Accessing Online Resources: The NSDL Science Literacy Maps

Digitized versions of the strand maps published in Project 2061’s Atlas of Science Literacy have become a popular feature for searching and accessing teaching resources in the various collections of the National Science Digital Library (NSDL), a national network of digital environments dedicated to fostering STEM education. Each online Science Literacy Map focuses on an important topic and shows the ideas students from kindergarten through high school are expected to know and how those ideas relate to and build on each other. The Science Literacy Maps offer other useful features as well, making them a unique tool for searching the NSDL’s extensive collection of digital resources.
With support from the National Science Foundation, Project 2061, a science education initiative of the American Association for the Advancement of Science (AAAS) and publisher of the Atlas of Science Literacy, is pleased to invite attendees at the NABT Professional Development Conference to participate in two free sessions where they can learn more about the Maps and how to use them effectively.

AP Biology Symposium
(Thursday, October 13th)
Advanced Placement (AP) Biology is changing, and in the fall of 2012, so is the way it’s going to be taught. In anticipation for these changes, NABT is offering a special AP Biology Symposium at the Professional Development Conference. This engaging, hands-on session will be held on Thursday, October 13th from 11:00 am – 4:45 pm. Featuring presentations from both BSCS and the College Board, this symposium is designed to specifically address the upcoming changes in the revised AP Biology Curriculum. There will be a special emphasis on inquiry based teaching and using labs to reinforce conceptual understanding of the four “big ideas.”
All conference participants are welcome to attend the NABT AP Biology Symposium, which is sponsored by Pearson.
NESCent/AIBS Evolution Symposium: Changing Humans in a Changing Environment

The eighth annual symposium will feature scientists whose research in human evolution adds to our growing understanding of human origins. Speakers will address the dynamic interplay between the ecological forces that shaped the distinctive traits that make us human, and human actions that are changing the environment around us.

Graduate Student Workshop In Anaheim

Are you a student member of NABT, looking for advice on how to build a stronger curriculum vitae? Maybe you want to learn how to better interact with colleagues and advisers? TheNABT Graduate Student Group is hosting a CV Review and Networking Workshop at theProfessional Development Conference. This workshop will be held immediately following theUndergraduate Faculty PD Summit on Friday, October 14th.
Workshop participants will have the opportunity to interact one-on-one with a faculty mentor who will review their CV’s, offering feedback and suggestions (so please bring a print copy of your CV for review). There will also be the opportunity to mix and mingle with undergraduate educators, helping you learn how to navigate a room and hone your networking skills.
