Biology Educator Leadership Scholarship (BELS)

 

 

 

 

 

 

The Biology Educator Leadership Scholarship (BELS) program was established by the National Association of Biology Teachers (NABT) to encourage and support teachers who want to further their education in the life sciences or life science education. The award recipient is required to be a practicing educator who is also enrolled (or anticipates enrolling) in a graduate program at Masters or Doctoral level.

.    Eligibility: NABT members with less than or equal to five years of teaching experience are eligible to apply if they are currently teaching or their certification status is in progress.

.    Selection Process: Awards are based on a combination of academic merit, professional promise, financial need, and academic or professional recommendation. Preference will be given to those individuals who will be teaching in a high needs school district (high poverty, low performing).

.    Timeline: Scholarship applications are due Thursday March 15, 2012. The NABT Awards Committee will score applications and award funding to an eligible applicant. Decision letters will be mailed in early May if you are an accepted or matriculated student. Admission applicants will not receive a response until an admission decision has been made.

.    A completed application form (deadline is March 15, 2012)

.    A current resume.

.    Official or unofficial UNDERGRADUATE AND GRADUATE (if currently enrolled) transcript. Transcripts must show overall GPA.

.    A brief essay (maximum two pages) describing your REASONS FOR GRADUATE STUDY and professional goals.

.    A brief essay (maximum two pages) describing your financial need. Place this statement in the context of your graduate education and professional goals. Highlight your particular financial concerns and issues.

.    A recommendation from two colleagues or supervisors who have observed your teaching.
