July 17th, 2009 Bob
First, the good news: OSTA and the OSDE are finishing preparations for this year’s Oklahoma Science Safety Summit. The bad news? A lack of response to the NSU-BA workshop has forced the cancellation of the July 29th workshop. But the workshop will still take place July 31st on the campus of the University of Central Oklahoma.
This workshop provides vital information that each and every school district (and school site) in Oklahoma needs to maintain a safe science laboratory and workplace. School personnel need to know that they are doing all they can to protect students from injury and themselves from liability. So far, most of the registrations to the workshop are from school districts that sent participants to last year’s summit. Does that say anything about the value of the workshop?
Highly competent science programs place emphasis on knowledge of and compliance with workplace safety guidelines. Don’t be left untrained!

This is designed as a Trainer of Trainers workshop and will provide the tools and knowledge to enable participants to lead the yearly training required in every school district in Oklahoma.
The primary presenter for the summit is Jim Collins of the Charles Dana Center at the University of Texas.
Jim’s extensive research in safety practices and procedures in Texas resulted in a recent strengthening on the Texas state laws regulating school safety and safety practice in Texas. His work includes theTexas Safety Standards for Kindergarten–Grade 12 and An Analysis of Laboratory Safety in Texas.

Jim Collins at the Safe Science Summit
As schools across Oklahoma open again for students, now is a good time to reflect on all the great workshops and institutes that took place this summer. OSTA members were evident as both participants and presenters in workshops sponsored by universities, research centers, museums, school districts, and the Oklahoma State Department of Education.
OSTA and OSDE teamed up to present the Science Safety Summit at the University of Central Oklahoma on August 1st. Fifty workshop participants spent a full day working with Jim Collins and Vanessa Westbrook of the Charles Dana Center at the University of Texas learning the ins and outs of safe science practice and the guidelines for safe science teaching practice as outlines by current laws and standards.
Did you participate is a science workshop or institute this summer? Perhaps you participated in one of many workshops funded by Math/Science Partnership grants. Did you attend an AP training? What about one of the OSDE regional conferences? Which was your favorite

workshop? Tell us about it. If you have not yet registered on this site, please do so and establish your log-in and password. You will then be able to click the comment link under this article and add your recommendation for the best workshop(s) you attended this summer.
