SB 834, the so-called “School Deregulation” Bill continues to progress through the Oklahoma Legislature. The bill passed the House Education Committee on a party line vote late last week and is expected to voted upon by the full House this week. The bill still offers more questions than it answers, but it has changed and now requires:
Certified teachers
Districts to maintain current curriculum standards including minimum graduation requirements
Continuing education courses for school board members
SB 1111, which, among other things, would move student assessment out of the State Department of Education to a new and separate state agency, narrowly passed the same House committee and moves on the the House floor for consideration.
