What’s Your Science Safety I.Q.?

Did you know that Oklahoma is not an OSHA state, but follows OSHA regulations as the standard for safety compliance?

Did you know your school district must document a yearly update of it’s Chemical Hygiene Plan to include your school’s chemical inventory?

Did you know that the Oklahoma Department of Labor can and does conduct onsite inspections to check for compliance.

Did you know that school labs must meet that same laboratory standard as research labs?

Did you know that the laboratory standard mandates that the water flowing from an eyewash or safety shower be “tepid” (which requires a special mixing valve).

Did you know the definition of hazardous chemicals include any chemical being used for a purpose other than it’s original intent? (Like vinegar being used for something other than making pickles)

If you knew all of these things, it’s likely you have attended a past Science Safety Summit.  If you haven’t attended a Safety Summit, there are still a few more days until registration ends.  One more little-known fact: In accident-related litigation, teachers are rarely cited or sued for neglect due to crowded or unsafe facilities.  It is always the building and district administrators who are charged or sued since they are the ones making the decisions to add a student, not update a lab, or supply safety equipment.  Make sure your administrator knows about this training opportunity!
