OSDE Board Receives Grade 5 and 8 OCCT Cut Scores

During the late July meeting of the Oklahoma State Board of Education, SDE staff presented the results of grades 5 and 8 Science and Writing Standard setting that was completed earlier in the month.   Standard setting is the process that allows experts to make judgments about the content that a student should know and be able to do in order to be reported in a specific performance level on the OCCT state assessments..

As with the Biology EOI Standard setting completed in June, the process was  completed by committees of 19-23 members composed of educators who know the content area, business representatives, and community members.  Decisions made by these committees are based on test content needed to meet the performance level descriptors.

The Board was told that  based upon these cut scores, proficient students are on track to be ready for the next grade and ultimately for college, career and citizenship.

On the slides below the results of this process show the scale score which provides a consistent interpretation of assessments across years and administrations (always 700 for proficient), the approximate percent of items correct for each score designations, and the percent of students in each performance level.

As with Biology EOI, the cut scores have changed, in some cases dramatically.  The student results are those that will be applied to students who tested this past April.
